About This Site

Top Board Games Tabletop publishes hands-on reviews, comparisons and how-to guides for family board games, cooperative games, card and party games, and games for younger children. Every game here has been played at a real kitchen table with kids from six to twelve and adults who would rather be playing video games, so we write about what actually matters: how long setup takes, whether the rules make sense on the first read, how the pieces hold up, and whether everyone wants to play again next week.

Game Night Safety

Small parts are a real choking hazard. Most board games include dice, pawns, tokens, cubes and tiles that are small enough for a toddler to swallow. Follow the age rating on the box, keep pieces off the floor when babies or toddlers are in the house, and count the pieces back into the box before you put a game away.

Age ratings are about safety as well as difficulty. A game marked 8+ or 10+ may contain small parts or concepts that are not suitable for younger children. Use your own judgment about each child, and supervise younger players.

Check for damaged components. Cracked plastic, split wooden pieces and frayed card edges can splinter or cut. Retire broken pieces rather than taping them back together.

Watch for allergies and materials. Some games include sand timers, scented or painted components, or rubber parts. If anyone in your home has a latex or material sensitivity, check the box contents first.

Store games safely. Heavy boxes stacked high on shelves can fall on small children. Keep heavier games on lower shelves and store loose pieces in sealed bags or containers.

Nothing on this site is professional safety, medical or child development advice. Always read the manufacturer's warnings and age guidance on the box.
